چکیده

We have measured the He/He and He/Ne ratios and chemical compositions of gases exsolved from deep-sea sediments at two sites (798 and 799) in the Japan Sea. The He/He and He/Ne ratios vary from 0.642 Ratm (where Ratm is the atmospheric He/He ratio of 1.393 × IQr) to 0.840 Ratm, and from 0.41 to 4.5, respectively. Helium in the samples can be explained by the mixing between atmospheric helium dissolved in bottom water of the Japan Sea and crustal helium in the sediment. The sedimentary helium is enriched in mantle-derived He compared with those from the Japan Trench and the Nankai Trough. This suggests that the basement of the Japan Sea has relatively large remnants of mantle-derived helium compared with that of the Pacific. Major chemical compositions of the samples are methane and nitrogen. There is a positive correlation between methane content and helium content corrected for air component. Based on the ^erHe-ZC^He diagram, the major part of methane can be attributed to crustal and/or organic origin.

Records of Neogene seawater chemistry and diagenesis in deep-sea carbonate sediments and pore fluids

Deep-sea pore fluids are potential archives of ancient seawater chemistry. However, the primary signal recorded in pore fluids is often overprinted by diagenetic processes. Recent studies have suggested that depth profiles of Mg concentration in deep-sea carbonate pore fluids are best explained by a rapid rise in seawater Mg over the last 10–20 Myr. To explore this possibility we measured the M...

Size fractionation, reproducibility and provenance of helium isotopes in north-equatorial pacific pelagic clays

Helium isotope compositions were measured in late Quaternary pelagic clays from the North Equatorial Pacific, where terrestrial and extra-terrestrial end member components are identified and quantified in different grain size populations. The results provide important constraints on the nature of interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) in sedimentary environments and on their application as consta...

Provenance of lithogenic surface sediments and pathways of riverine suspended matter in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea: evidence from Nd/Nd and Sr/Sr ratios

In order to characterize the provenance of lithogenic surface sediments from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS), residual (leached) fraction of 34 surface samples have been analysed for their Nd/Nd and Sr/Sr isotope ratios. The sample locations bracket all important entrances of riverine suspended matter into the EMS as well as all sub-basins of the EMS. The combined analyses of these two isot...
